A succinct summary on Science Trends for the recently published work in Applied Geography. Exciting work using quantitative spatial analysis to examine and explain the demarcation of the provincial boundaries in China proper.

Intelligent Campus
An interesting project from Jisc, a company that “provides digital solutions for UK education and research.” The website has a blog post highlighting their view of a smart library. Also the common data for a smart campus:
- Maps
- Space utilisation
- Learning space description
- Movement and tracking data
- Sensors
- Temperature
- Humidity
- CO2 levels
- Timetabling
- Fitness Apps
- Mobile Apps
- CCTV
- IoT
- Smart buildings
- RFID Tracking
- Wi-Fi Tracking
NUS Navigated
One app serving the NUS was finally released. This is a cross-Faculty collaboration with many student helpers that made it possible…

US Semantic Tech Symposium
Some of the points brought up by Ken Bagstad @ USGS regarding the US Semantic Technologies Symposium (http://us2ts.org/):
- Strong emphasis on ontology development than application, but limited mentioning of geo-semantics in the plenary track.
- Constant calls for more tools but no inventory of existing tools, strengths/weaknesses, and how they “might be built”.
The context to raise this issue: does the community (ESIP) have a clear big picture goals that goes beyond the ESIP bylaws?
Tools mentioned in Ken Bagstad’s email include:
- SWEET
- COR
- BioPortal and CEDAR (by John)
- k.LAB and Integrated Modelling
Vancouver Historical GIS
1912 Goad’s atlas was scanned and digitized to be added to their vanmap system. The effort is somewhat similar to GIS SI at Geography, NUS, yet we have only scanned the historical maps.

Context Matters
Reposting an interesting article on informing policy with the knowledge produced in research.
